Seamode Oceanographic Services

Oceanography - modelling tides - lake and coastal circulation.

Seamode Oceanographic Services offer a physical oceanography consultant service, specialising in modelling tides and surges, lake circulation, coastal circulation and air sea interaction.

We have over 30 years of experience in the North East Atlantic area, studying the Irish coast,  UK coasts and the Persian Gulf and are happy to travel to any destination internationally.  More information on the sort of work undertaken, can be found by following the links below:

Surge and tide modelling

We provide 2d numerical models that are fast, can be run on a standard PC, and can provide good predictions / hindcasts of the astronomical and surge tides in an area.

Our tidal predictions offer good geographical coverage, with predictions available at a resolution of up to 200m over a large surface area for a high resolution model. We can also offer predictions based on gauge data, if you require highly localised data (gauge models can provide predictions accurate to better than 10cm).

Surge models are forced by tidal and wind data. Hindcast wind stress data from the ECMWF or NCEP reanalysis can be used to represent historical surges. Surge elevations  at the model resolution can be produced for long periods and these can then be used to produce surge and extreme level statistics for a given location. We can also use met forecasts to give surge predictions.

Coastal and lake modelling

In situations where the interest is in the 3d flow, e.g. in an estuary, river plume or stratified lake, 3d modelling is essential. We can model Thermohaline circulation in addition to tidal and wind driven flows. This sort of study is appropriate to descriptions of residual flow, e.g. for pollution dispersion studies.

Tidal analysis and prediction of tides and currents

Our Tidal Analysis models enable you to predict the tidal component of elevation and current values from measured data. In addition, they enable the extraction of the residual tidal elevations (e.g. surges) and flows (which may indicate dynamically significant long term flows).  We can also obtain statistics of oceanography flows and elevations.
